I do have a sort of opportunistic interest in old railways, dark tunnels, disused lines, abandoned stations and preserved steam trains. It is a mysterious vanished world of which only traces remain today.
I am planning to use this page to describe walks or cycle rides along old railway lines, photographs of abandoned stations, and of course steam trains in all their glory.
Dartmouth Steam Railway June 2013
We stayed at a great B&B in Paignton - the steam trains were a small part of the trip.
Epping Ongar Railway June 2013
As part of the 150th anniversary of London Underground, heritage rolling stock was running on the Epping Ongar Railway
Harz Mountains October 2012
We visited the Hartz mountains in Germany last Autumn where there have the largest network of narrow gauge railways in Europe (around 140km of track). Most of the trains are 1950s steam locomotives and the railway survived because it was located in former East Germany. Steam railways tended to remain in use in during the communist era in Eastern Europe, particularly mountain and forest railways.
Glenfinnan Viaduct May 2011
We spent a week in Scotland staying in Fort William. One day we took some photos of The Jacobite (steam train) going over Glenfinnan Viaduct
Severn Valley Railway 2009
I got a mini-train driving course for my birthday. It was amazing.
